Famine I (2001)

Oil on canvas

56x62cm

The Great Famine of 1845-50 in Ireland claimed over a million lives from starvation. Many more fled to America on 'coffin ships' and died of disease before reaching their destination. A legacy of abandoned homes is still evident throughout the countryside, their crumbling stones a monument to a nation's suffering.
